On February 18, Technovation Girls Uzbekistan, the country’s largest STEM program for girls, launched its new season. The program is organized by NGO Tech4Impact, in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Technologies, the Center for the Development of Digital Education, and Yandex Uzbekistan. The event brought together around 1,500 girls, and participants from Tashkent, Andijan, Namangan, Nukus, Urgench, and Fergana were also able to join the opening online.
Technovation Girls is an international technology competition for girls, held annually in 70+ countries worldwide. The competition aims to equip participants with soft skills, spark their interest in IT, programming, and AI-driven solutions for social issues, and introduce them to entrepreneurship in the tech sector.
The 12-week program includes training in programming, marketing, business skills, and presentation techniques. Participants learn to tackle socially significant issues through mobile and web applications and create AI-based projects aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). No prior programming experience is required.
“Technovation Girls has been running in Uzbekistan for 9 years, and thanks to new partnerships and program expansion in the regions, we hope this season will be the biggest yet in terms of both participation and the quality of team projects.”
– Saida Yusupova, Director of NGO Tech4Impact
Minister of Digital Technologies Sherzod Shermatov emphasized the importance of supporting Uzbekistan’s young women in tech:
“Last week, the President held an important and sincere meeting with youth, announcing major plans and new initiatives to unlock their potential, with a special focus on supporting women. I hope this year’s Technovation opening will mark a key milestone in fostering projects and startups led by our girls. If we perform even better this year, even more Uzbek teams will make it to the international finals in California. Our girls are highly creative, and other countries recognize this with admiration. I encourage you to set big goals and never stop striving to achieve them.”
Izzat Shukurov, Head of Yandex Uzbekistan, also expressed the company’s commitment to the initiative:
“Yandex Uzbekistan has supported this program for several years because we believe that more women in IT means more ideas, breakthrough solutions, and opportunities for everyone. Last year, 60 of our female employees mentored teams, helping them develop tech solutions for social challenges. We continue to expand IT education in Uzbekistan by providing access to knowledge and career opportunities through coding schools, internships, and educational programs.”
In 2025, Yandex specialists will once again mentor teams across all regions of Uzbekistan. Over three months, each team, with the help of mentors, must:
✔ Develop a socially-oriented mobile or web application
✔ Write a business plan
✔ Create a project presentation video
✔ Present their project at the competition final
Uzbekistan’s teams are working on mobile applications addressing key issues such as:
In 2023, at the Technovation international finals in Silicon Valley (USA), the Uzbek team Tecnas became the first-ever finalist from the country, ranking among the top 12 teams out of 2,500+ worldwide. They won the Social Impact Award for the best project addressing social challenges, presenting a VR laboratory app for schools.
Long-term research shows that even 5+ years after participating in Technovation, alumni report that the program positively influenced their career paths, leadership skills, and job opportunities. Many graduates go on to win competitions, receive international scholarships, enroll in top universities, pursue careers in IT, science, and engineering, and even launch their own startups.
“I encourage girls to explore the tech field and challenge stereotypes that it’s difficult for women. My experience with Technovation showed that it builds confidence and opens doors to a successful career and quality education. You (and your parents) will realize that you can achieve any goal and bring any project to life—whether in IT or another field. This program can help you get into the best universities in Uzbekistan and worldwide and secure a financially stable future.”
– Sabina, Technovation 2023 participant
